Yet another perennial topic

My pick?

I admit, if I'd only seen the movies, I'd probably pick Venkman. Bill Murray so completely dominated them that they're practically "The Adventures of Peter Venkman and His Ghostbuster Pals". But due to the animated series, the interesting twists brought to the character by J. Micheal Straczynski and the brilliant voice performance by Maurice LaMarche, my all-around favorite is thus Doctor Spengler.

He creates the first impression of your classic Mad Scientist/Nerd, but before long you start to see more. For one thing, and this was something I'd enver seen before in 1984, he gets women. A certain redhead flirting with him formed some of the most charming scenes of the first movie; in the animation he turns into a veritable Babe Magnet, with women in several episodes clearly "interested" in him (The librarian, the girl in Lupusville, Dixie, ect.) The animation slowly developed his relationship with said redhead, too, but that's a whole other topic in and of itself...

And the other interesting thing: every once in a while his logic breaks down to interesting effect. Probably the most famous example is the "Your Mother!!!" scene in GB1, where he tries to throttle Walter Peck; or when he looks about ready to do the same to Paul Smart in "Robo Buster"...one of LaMarche's best scenes, as Egon keeps a steady voice yet is clearly boiling over inside, uncharacteristically snide and rude.

By my personal estimation, the most complex and, well, "fascinating" of the four.

(And just like the old board, I confined this to the four original Ghostbusters to prevent hairsplitting amongs advocates of Janine, Slimer, and Louis. They'll be in the Supporting Character poll. The Extreme Ghostbusters will get a poll in the Animation forum)

For me, it'd have to be Winston.

I sympathize with the everyman character, the person you look to most to make sense out of the most ridiculous things when no one else around seems to understand the absurdity of the situation. Hence, four grown men running around a major metropolitan city brandishing nuclear accelerators while chasing ghosts. But hey, the man's got to eat and pay the bills. So, yeah I agree with him...'if there' a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe in anything you say."

But more than that, you had the mouth...the brain...and the heart. Though, Winston was the glue that held the sanity together. He brought the Ghostbusters down to Earth and approached every dangerous venture like any one of us would...by trying not to get killed.

Excellent - looking forward to it.

I voted last night, but couldn't be bothered to comment. It's Peter Venkman. Unoriginal, I know. Like Raphael of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he was everyone's favourite, at least where I come from. I like him because he's a laugh.

Incidentally, I see that polls work a little better on this board. It marks your option with an X in case you forget what you voted for, which I have been known to do, and you can view the results without voting (if there was a way to do that before I couldn't figure it out - I always thought it was bizarre).

The poll options on PhpBB3 are so far above those on Proboards it isn't funny.

You can edit the poll once the thread is started.

You can add a poll to a thread that's already started (Proboards, you had to chose a regular thread or a poll thread before you even start)

You can even edit the options so that you can revote or even vote for multiple candidates. I guess if I'd done that it would have solved Jason's problem.

Theres something about each character that I like but if I really had to choose, it would have to be Ray.. Just reminds me of myself, personality-wise....

Peter. I've always been attracted to men with a dry sense of humor and Bill Muarry captured the character of Peter Venkman so perfectly. :)

Egon for sure. He's so damn funny even when he isn't trying to be. I find characters like that to be very charming. :D

Ufff...I voted Peter because it said 'original' character, so I assumed from the movie...I found Egon's character in the movie a little boring and 'blah'...but from the animation perspective, it would be a toss up between Peter/Egon, then Winston, then Ray...I love Peter's sense of humour, but there's something mysterious and intriguing about Egon...Winston is like the big brother, and Ray is loveable in that ruffle-your-hair type of way...

But I honestly love the dynamic of the four of them together. The writers of TRG did a great job of developing that...they had their own unique chemistry that has been unmatched by a foursome since...

P.S. I love your response Mr. No-Ghost, and I whole-heartedly agree. Winston is often taken for granted because his character isn't so extreme but I think he really grounds the group and 'keeps it real' so to speak...glad to see someone noticed... 8-)

(like it's not entirely obvious)

Spengler all the way, babes!

of course, my reasoning is a skosh different than everyone else's.
and i shouldn't post it, for there may be tender ears/eyes about this forum. I'll make it itsy-bitsy so if you're REALLY interested in knowing a fraction of the reason I chose Spengler, then copy it, paste it in Wordpad, and blow it up to legible sizing.

or you can squint.

i mean, did no one like a character just because he was funny AND dead sexy?! Don't mean to go all Lola Heatherton (or do i???) but come ON! of course, the movies are great, but throw harold ramis in the mix and i'm BEYOND satisfied.

I picked egon and that goes for both the movies and the cartoons. However for second, third and forth I change my answers between the cartoons and the movies.

Movies:
1.Egon
2.Peter
3.Ray
4.Winston

Cartoons:
1.Egon
2.Ray
3.Winston
4.Peter

Never really liked the cartoon version as much as the movies. Tho the better is season 1 for the cartoons, I don't really care for him. Yes he's good for a joke, but thats it for me. Egon and Ray team sort of worked for me with Winston being the common man to relate to people. But Peter in the cartoons never was the leader he was in the movies.

However the reason for Egon is he sort of was the leader in most ways, and to be honest episodes like Cry Uncle seal the deal. The movies Egon was no leader but I love the witty humor the character has. It connects with me best.

Egon, Egon, Egon, :egon:, :egon:, :egon:, take a look at my name. (Him, his wife, his daughter, his daughter's boyfriend, his son, and his son's love interest!)

Same here. I wanted to be as smart... but failed miserably in the end, though wearing spectacles helps the impression. :)

My favorite original Ghostbuster is Dr. Ray Stanz, because he like me more than others and how to explain dana´s building is central spectrum, I remember when my brother told me that my room is the control central of fantasmalandia.

I also remember in 1984 when my brother at that time was 18, ran from my room saying that there ghosts in my room, like Ray ran out of the library.

My favorite have to be Ray. As the heart of the ghostbusters everything he does is golden. Also I like Winston too as the guy who make sure the others don't get carried away with their stuff.
